The defence of a ship with sword, bayonet, and pike. Group training and melee games based upon the instructions for attack and defence in boarding actions according to Lieutenant William Pringle Green (1812). Pringle Green was promoted for his conspicuous bravery at the Battle of Trafalgar whilst serving aboard HMS Conqueror, and so certainly knew a thing or two about the subject! We will briefly work through some basics of the weapons before moving on to a range of group training and games. All weapons to be synthetic/rubber, any one-handed sword is suitable (shorter is best), musket and bayonet trainers, and spears to be used in two hands. Daggers and axes are also encouraged. A number will be available to borrow but please bring anything suitable that you have. We will dive into combat on the decks of ships in the age of sail. Let’s have some fun you landlubbers!

Guest Instructor

Bio – Nick has been practicing European swordsmanship since the late 1990s and is the co-founder of the Academy of Historical Fencing (2006) in South Wales and the Southwest of England. His initial area of study was the rapier of the early 17th century, but soon turned his main focus to British military swordsmanship of the Napoleonic era. He continues to practice a wide array of HEMA styles and weapons, though the Napoleonic era is his favourite area of research and practice where he pursues the collecting of antiques and the spreading of knowledge of the subject on the AHF Youtube channel.
